It’s fun all the way as the “girls” entertain the audience like no Brighton audience has ever been entertained before in the new DEVILS AND ANGELS show. They take no prisoners as the extravaganza glides from seductively sexy to outrageously funny. It’s a night no one will want to forget!

Contemporary dance, aerial circus and physical theatre converge in a multilayered, visceral thrill as Lindsey Butcher&#39s acclaimed Gravity & Levity (Taking Flight) once again redefines the possibilities of vertical dance.

Lindsey Butcher was aerial coordinator for Stomp&#39s extraordinary Lost and Found Orchestra (Brighton Festival 06). SHIFT rekindles this creative energy as Stomp/LFO co-creators Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas join two formidable choreographic talents - the intensely physical Charlotte Vincent (Vincent Dance Theatre) and lyrical Charles Linehan - to form an extraordinary triple bill programme.

Together they create a perfectly balanced distillation of interlinked choreography, live music and sculptural design, played out in a shifting set that carves through the space to create a captivating promenade performance. Planes and perspectives shift as this intimate and eloquent aerial spectacle takes contemporary dance to new heights!

First witnessed in Cork in 2005, and the jewel in the crown of the Barbican&#39s 2006 Folk Britannia series, the Daughters of Albion brings together some of England&#39s finest female folk artists and contemporary singersongwriters. Connected by a strong sense of place, a certain wit and singularity of voice, these Daughters of Albion sing songs of life, love, sex and death, shot through with a deliciously dark seam of melancholy.

The evening features a remarkable band (including Martin Carthy, Huw Warren, Kate St John and Leo Abrahams), and an imaginative set-list, setting ancient English ballads alongside West Country trip-hop and modern classics by Sandy Denny, Lal Waterson, PJ Harvey, Kate Bush et al.

Australian-born cellist Pei-Sian Ng seems destined for greatness. After making his international solo debut with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra in 2004 he has barely looked back, winning first prize and gold medal at last year&#39s prestigious Royal Over-seas League competition, premiering Kalevi Aho&#39s Double Cello Concerto with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, and winning the coveted honour of Commonwealth Musician of the Year 2007. Here the 24-year-old performs a bravura programme of Boccherini, Martinu and Mark Anthony-Turnage.

How do novelists reflect the world around them -the politics, the cultural landscape and the burning issues of the day? James Meek (author of the best-selling The People&#39s Act of Love ) spent 20 years reporting on the frontline of international politics before becoming a full-time writer. His latest novel We Are Now Beginning Our Descent is a timeless tale of folly and love set against the explosive politics of our age. Hisham Matar&#39s Booker-shortlisted debut novel In the Country of Men is a haunting perspective on love and betrayal on the mean streets of 1970s Tripoli.

Exclusive to Brighton Festival

In its heyday Brighton Dome&#39s hand-built 1936 pipe organ was the centrepiece of the world&#39s longest running seaside concert series. Seventy years on Brighton Festival puts a subversive new spin on the &#39organ extravaganza&#39 in a 21st century renegade recital.

First to put its 3,000 pipes through their paces (with Italian harpist Beatrice Martini) is Robert Lippok, a seminal figure on Berlin&#39s ambient electronica scene and founder of German post-rock outfit To Rococo Rot. In hot pursuit are Australia&#39s The Necks, arguably the most exploratory and riveting avant-improv trio on the planet, tonight trading piano for pipe organ for their freeform sonic adventures.

Featured Festival composer Ian Wilson gets the Cappa String Quartet treatment as the ROSL Ensemble Prize winners perform his Edvard Munch-inspired fourth quartet Veer . Formed in2004 by four students from the Royal Academy of Music and named after the famous Italian violin maker, this remarkably gifted young ensemble brings a fresh and vibrant approach to the quartet repertoire. Alongside Wilson&#39s Veer in this all British programme is Walton&#39s Quartet in A minor and Britten&#39s 3 Divertimenti.

If the daily headlines and stats are to be believed, our children are over-fed, over-stimulated and overwrought. If true, then where is the fault line? Too much freedom? Too little discipline? Overbearing expectation? In a 24/7 world of TV, mobile phones, computer games and chat rooms, how can we steer our children towards a healthy, happy and productive engagement with adulthood? Joining Libby Brooks, Guardian journalist and author, to discuss and debate this pressing topic are Tanya Byron, psychologist, broadcaster and parenting guru Sue Palmer, author of the best-selling child development bible Toxic Childhood and Carl Honoré, author of Under Pressure Rescuing Children from the Culture of Hyper-Parenting.

In an age of spin, sleaze and empty sound bites, in whom or what can we place our trust? Our politicians? Public figures? The Press? As an ever growing scepticism pervades our public life, these seem unlikely contenders. Is this a contemporary condition or an age-old instinct? And what effect does it have on our value systems and engagement with the society around us?

Joining Brighton Festival Chair and Guardian columnist Polly Toynbee in this compelling debate are: former Member of Parliament and committed human rights campaigner Oona King philosopher, author and broadcaster A.C. Grayling BBC&#39s political editor Nick Robinson and journalist, campaigner and novelist Melissa Benn.
