Bahok Fri  09/05/08 - Sat   10/05/08
Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Church Street
Akram Khan is one of contemporary dance's most charismatic talents. After hugely acclaimed duets with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (Zero Degrees) and Sylvie Guillem(Sacred Monsters), he now presents bahok, an eagerly anticipated new group collaboration with the National Ballet of China. For bahok Khan has assembled a dream team. Multi award-winning composer Nitin Sawhney is a long-time partner and new to the fold are the members of China's flagship classical ballet company. The dancers are from different cultures, traditions and dance backgrounds: Chinese, Korean, Indian, South African and Spanish. As they come together in a contemporary Babel of language and movement, this multicultural group tries to share 'the things they carry with them' - their memories of home, their dreams and aspirations. They are carriers. They are bahok. Another effortless articulation of the evolving language of dance from a true modern master.

The Bootmaker's Daughter Wed  07/05/08 - Sat   10/05/08
St Bartholomew's Church, Ann Street
The year is 1557. Religious persecution is rife as Mary Tudor's reign of terror blazes across the country. Sixteen-year-old Thomasina - the youngest of the 17 Lewes martyrs - has reached a crisis of faith: be true to her own conscience and suff er the brutal force of church and state? Or bend to its will and live an unconscionable lie? Written by Lewes-based Chris Dixon, directed by Thomas Guthrie (Fairy Queen,Festival 06) and performed in the evocative, candlelit setting of St. Bartholomew's Church, The Bootmaker's Daughter is a haunting new music/theatre production exclusive to Brighton Festival. Thomasina's tragic story is brought to life as an ensemble cast of actors joins forces with The Cardinall's Musick, the Gramophone award-winning early music consort, led by Tudor maestro Andrew Carwood. Music from William Byrd to traditional tavern songs combines with fully staged drama as this remarkable tale of courage and conscience is played out in an intimate and atmospheric promenade performance.

4d art - Norman Tue  06/05/08 - Sat   10/05/08
Theatre Royal, New Road
Scottish-born Canadian filmmaker Norman McLaren (1914-87) was one of the most inventive abstract animators of the 20th century. Now a mesmerising new show from mixed media masters Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon(aka lemieux.pilon 4d art) brings the genius of Norman McLaren to life in a magical fusion of state-of-the-art virtual projection and live theatre. In an improbable act of theatrical alchemy, dancer/choreographer Peter Trosztmer literally inhabits McLaren's cinematic universe. He dances, weaves, converses and interacts with the animator's pulsing images and leaping figures, set loose in a riotous ballet of line, light and movement. Witness a miracle of theatre as a creative legend is reborn in this witty, playful and impossibly inventive one-man tour de force.
